Graduate Student Speaker: Malachi Hacohen: Jacob and Esau, Isaac and Ishmael

Malachi Hacohen, Duke University, will give this year’s Graduate Student Network academic lecture, titled:

Jacob and Esau, Isaac and Ishmael : The Future of Jewish-Christian and Jewish-Muslim Relations

The Holocaust and the State of Israel transformed the traditional paradigms of Jews’ Relations with non-Jews. Jacob & Esau, typologically Jews and Christians and traditionally enemies, have reconciled. Isaac & Yishmael, typologically Jews and Muslims and traditionally less hostile, have grown apart. This talk provides a panoramic overview of the changing dynamics of inclusion and inter-faith relations, viewed from a Jewish perspective.

Malachi Haim Hacohen (Ph.D., Columbia) is Bass Fellow, Associate Professor of History, Political Science and Religion, as well as Slavic, German and Jewish Studies at Duke University. He also directs the Religions and Public Life Initiative at the Kenan Institute for Ethics.  His Karl Popper – The Formative Years, 1902–1945: Politics and Philosophy in Interwar Vienna (Cambridge, 2000) won the Herbert Baxter Adams Prize of the AHA and the Victor Adler State Prize. He has published essays on the Central European Jewish intelligentsia, Cold War liberalism, and cosmopolitanism and Jewish identity in the leading professional journals. His Jacob & Esau: Jewish European History Between Nation and Empire is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press. He has been a fellow at the National Humanities Center, the Center for Advanced Studies in the Behavioral Science, the Oxford Center for Advanced Hebrew and Jewish Studies, and other international centers, and a recipient of several prestigious fellowships.
