From cancer patient to aspiring oncologist

After being diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma as a senior in high school, incoming first-year student Julian Robles aspires to become an oncologist.

Julian Robles has always wanted to be a doctor.

When he was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma as a senior in high school, Robles spent hours with doctors during treatments and saw firsthand how they’re helping others.

His experience with cancer, he said, shaped him as a person, but it also solidified the career he wanted to pursue.

“I’m not going to let it define me 100%, but it’s going to be part of my story,” he said. “I’ve decided to hopefully pursue a career in oncology. I want to dedicate the rest of my life to helping others.”

As a Chancellor’s Science Scholar at UNC-Chapel Hill, Robles’ hopes to kickstart this dream career.

“At Carolina, I hope I accomplish my goal of finding myself. This place is huge — there are tons of classes in every discipline. I want to see what my role is and where I fit in,” he said.
