Chemistry Professor Emeritus, Ed Samulski, invents emergency face shield

April 07, 2020

Need an emergency face shield for use at home?

Commiserating with colleagues over the lack of PPE for health care workers, Ed Samulski had an idea: He described a simple way to make a face shield using a clear 2-liter soda bottle, a box cutter or scissors, and masking tape. The compression-fit shield may be useful for patients as well as for caretakers.

Samulski is emeritus Cary Boshamer Professor of Chemistry, co-founder of the 3D printing company Carbon, and launching a start-up that is focused on high performance polymers, Allotropica Technologies.
