Meet a Tar Heel: Chris Young

Raleigh native and incoming junior Chris Young didn't follow the initial path he thought would lead him to Carolina, but he has no regrets about his journey that led him to Chapel Hill.

Growing up as an avid Tar Heel fan in Raleigh, Chris Young always envisioned himself coming to Carolina as an 18-year-old first-year student.

But then a chance to begin a career as a radio disc jockey right out of a high school and an ensuing 16-year career in the Air Force changed his timeline.

Now, as a 39-year-old, Young has made his way to Chapel Hill, transferring in as a junior Media and Journalism major. He is among the 800 transfers students beginning their Carolina journeys this fall.

“In all honesty, I wouldn’t trade any part of the path it took me to get here,” Young said. “It makes me truly appreciate what it takes to be a student here at Carolina and how valuable this education is. … No matter how old you are, no matter what point you’re at in life, never give up on your dreams, because they can always be achieved.”
